Raglan and around
Situated on the jaw-dropping rugged west coast of the North Island, Raglan is iconic in Aotearoa and might just be the last example of an authentic Kiwi sea-side town. Unspoiled by the excesses of rampant tourism, this small seaside settlement, with its population of around 4,000, is just 30 minutes drive from Hamilton, and a must destination for all New Zealanders and international visitors alike.
From spring into summer and through until late autumn Raglan hums as a hive of activity. The township owns a rich history entwining art, music and a laid-back ‘bohemian’ culture, and the Tasman Sea brings the local coastline world-class left-hand surf breaks, rolling onto beaches of velvety black volcanic sands
By day you can leisurely peruse the wares of local artisans, enjoy fine food and coffee at one of Raglan’s funky cafés, stroll along the waterfront, or embark on a relaxing harbour cruise. Then by night you can ‘take-a-load-off’ and relax for a few quiets at the Harbourview Hotel, then order an alfresco dinner, before dancing the night away with a healthy dose of local rhythm ‘n’ blues.
Alternatively, why not be adventurous and go kayaking, deep-sea fishing, horse-trekking, or even get some surf lessons before taking on Manu Bay’s famous left-hand break? There are hundreds of reasons why you should visit Raglan many of which are listed to the right. Click the button to find out more.
